Meet Roy!

Meet Roy! This chair was part of a 3 Day Kim's Upholstery Chair Workshop held in Plymouth the weekend of September 22 - 24, 2023. During that weekend 5 attendees completed 5 chairs. This was my chair. Frequently I'm asked where I learned to Upholster. I learned through Kim's Upholstery . I was lucky enough in September to host my teacher, Kim, while I worked on Roy.

Roy belonged to my husband's mom. She loved this chair, and she loved Roy, my husband's dad. And given this chair is wearing a beautiful royal blue, he's Roy. He just is.

Roy is an antique platform rocker in an Eastlake style. When Roy first came to us he was wearing a burgundy velvet that had seen a few too many years. I recovered Roy about a dozen years ago using a remnant I had on hand. Because I was really just experimenting on furniture at the time, I did not replace the jute foundation or replace the fills. I just sort of covered it up. For a while that worked until recently when the seat became squishy-soft and overall this chair looked pretty shabby.

A little investigation showed that the foundation had completely failed. (Bottomed out.) After some frame repair, I replaced the jute, added a dozen new springs, gave them an 8 way tie, new fills, and new fabric. Roy is wearing a velvet fabric from Stout called Bountiful 5 in French Blue. The welt cord was created from a Stout woven fabric Hialeah 2 in the color Lake.
